Pfizer recalls blood pressure drug over cancer risk

Pfizer is recalling some shipments of its blood pressure drug Accuretic after it found that a cancer-causing compound exceeded safe limits in the affected lots, according to the New York Times. Nitrosamine, which is found in water, beer, bacon and some grilled meats, is thought to increase cancer risks when consumed for long periods of time. The recall, which includes only some lots of Accuretic along with some authorized generic versions, is just one of a string of nitrosamine-related medication recalls.

According to Pfizer, there have been no known adverse reactions among people who take Accuretic. While patients who currently take Accuretic face no immediate risks, Pfizer urges them to talk to their doctors about possible alternatives.
