It’s time to plant (or transplant) peonies.
Peonies should be planted about six weeks before the ground freezes. Early fall is perfect because it give the plant time to establish a root system.
Peonies require winter cold for dormancy and to set their blooms.
Be sure to choose a site with excellent drainage and at least six hours of sun. To test drainage, fill a 12-inch hole with water. If it takes more than a few hours to clear, it probably isn’t a great place for peonies, according to Oaksill.com.
