FDA aims to cut nicotine in cigarettes

A proposal from the Food and Drug Administration would require tobacco companies to reduce the nicotine in cigarettes to make them less addictive, according to the New York Times. A nicotine-limiting rule would likely take years to go into effect and already faces strong opposition from tobacco companies.

Smoking still claims an estimated 480,000 lives around the world each year, but only New Zealand has advanced a similar policy.
