Lots of people love working from home. The environment is comfortable, there are fewer distractions (even though the dog is always welcome), and nobody ever expects you to wear uncomfortable shoes or suits that can only be dry-cleaned.
But even good things can go too far, and if you find yourself working from your bed or sporting pajamas and messy hair every day, it might be time to rethink your approach. Here are a few tips for looking professional (and feeling productive) without sacrificing comfort.
* Get out of bed and get dressed every morning — no pajamas. A basic grooming routine and a fresh outfit every morning send a message to your brain and body that it's time to get to work.
* If you have trouble "clocking out" when you work from home, consider changing your clothes at the end of each workday to give yourself a signal that it's time to relax.
* For work-from-home clothes, loose-fitting garments in soft fabrics are a great choice. Vogue recommends a cozy cardigan or stretchy knitwear that feels great and still looks presentable during on-camera meetings. Don't be afraid of bright colors — you might be surprised how much they can boost your mood.
* Skip the ragged sweatpants and look instead for loose-fitting jeans or trousers, or stretchy athleisure-style pants.
* Loose button-down shirts are comfortable and look great on everyone — just make sure to iron or steam wrinkled shirts, especially if you'll be on camera.
* It's fine to wear socks or go barefoot, but a comfortable pair of sneakers or slides might help you feel a little bit more put-together without constricting your feet.
A good rule to follow: Wear something that you would feel comfortable leaving the house in. You may not have to wear dress pants and high heels every day anymore, but you're worth taking a few extra minutes each morning so you can look good and feel productive in your home office.
