These guys take a bribe

If you've had trouble with squirrels digging up your bulbs and plants and eating your flower buds, the editors of This Old House magazine may have a solution for you.

They tried several repellents that tasted or smelled foul, and these worked for a while. But the products have to be applied every week, which can turn out to be quite a chore.

They found that bribery worked best. They put ears of dried corn in the very back of the yard in both spring and fall. This kept the squirrels fed and less likely to eat garden foliage and bulbs.

Never use bone meal to fertilize in your garden if you have a large squirrel population — experts say that it lures them like catnip.
