Winter getaway: Sun + par 3 golf

If you are looking for a winter excursion, consider a par 3 golf course in a sunny climate, a combination that is becoming increasingly popular.

In the U.S. there are about 700 par 3 golf courses, some lit for night play, and among new courses, par 3 courses account for about 34 percent of all builds, according to the National Golf Foundation.

Par 3 golf generally takes less time, and is more accessible for people with varying degrees of skill, but that doesn't mean it's easy.

In Scottsdale Arizona, The Bad Little Nine is considered the world's hardest par 3 course, where it is almost impossible to break par. Boulders, lots of desert sand traps, and pins balanced on ledges make the course tricky, but picturesque and a lot of fun.

Seasoned golfers like the courses because they are great places to practice shots around the green. Experts say improving your game around the green can cut five shots off your score on any course. A couple of hours spent at a par-three is better practice than going to a driving range.

For those who are relatively new at the game, shorter holes offer more success and less frustration. There are opportunities for a memorable birdie.
