Travel planner: A lovely gem hides in an unexpected place

Snuggled up against the Ozark Mountains, is a relatively small town that appeals to tastes both sophisticated and quaint. It's safe, clean, beautiful — and not known for any of those things.

To most of America, Bentonville, Arkansas, if it is known at all, is understood mainly to be the birthplace of Walmart and home of founder Sam Walton.

But, the town of about 60,000 has been called the 'capital of cool' and the 'mountain bike capital of the world.'

It has world class art and culture. You can see an impressive collection of American masterpieces at The Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and wander the sculpture gardens. Nearby, The Momentary offers contemporary exhibits, live music, and events in a repurposed factory, while over 100 public art installations dot the streets.

Outdoor adventures are everywhere. Over 140 miles of wide trails, paved and unpaved, for all skill levels, including family-friendly paths at Coler Mountain Bike Preserve that invite walking and biking.

In the pretty town square, boutiques, cafes, restaurants, and breweries make an interesting stroll. Visitors find lots of high south cuisine served with Southern hospitality at affordable prices. Stop at the Walmart museum for a glimpse at retail history. For family friendly vibes don't miss The Scott Family Amazeum.

The weather is usually fine, too. Warm summers and mild winters (about 50 degrees Fahrenheit in January with occasional dusting of snow).
