Christianity, for more than 2,000 years, has rested on one belief: That Jesus Christ died and rose again. Here is the account of the resurrection paraphrased from the gospels of Luke and Mark.
On the morning after the Sabbath, Mary, the mother of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, Joanna, the mother of James, and others, went to the tomb to anoint the body of Jesus. They found the stone which closed it rolled away. They entered the tomb and did not find Jesus.
Two young men, thought to be angels, in shining garments appeared to them not to be afraid. The angels said, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here. He has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: "The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.' "
The women returned from the sepulchre and told these things to the apostles. Peter and others ran to the tomb and found it empty. Later Jesus appeared a number of times to Peter and the other apostles.
There are other stories in the Bible of people being resurrected. Jesus raised Lazarus, for example, but none is the same as the Easter story. Jesus' resurrection was a resurrection to eternal life!
