A hallucinogenic drug, Ketamine, is being evaluated for its anti-depressant qualities, according to New Atlas.
Ketamine was originally developed in the 1960s as an anesthetic but it has developed a reputation for its anti-depressant properties.
Now a study by Columbia University Medical Center appears to support this belief. In the study, 80 patients with clinically significant suicidal thoughts were given either ketamine or a sedative. In one day, the ketamine group displayed major improvement in reduction of suicidal thoughts that appeared to last through the six-week follow-up period.
