When the 62-gun Spanish galleon the San Jose lost a battle with the British and sank off the coast of Colombia in 1708, it took 200 tons of gold, silver and uncut gemstones with it.
No one ever forgot about the treasure, especially those with calculators who tallied up the billions that sat on the sea floor. They just didn't know where it was for 300 years.
Now, evidently a lot of people do know. A salvage company, Sea Search Armada, found the wreck in 1982. In 2015, the government of Colombia found it again nearby. And, now there is a fight, as you might expect.
Sea Search says the treasure is at least partially theirs for finding it. Colombia says it is on their coast, so it belongs to them. And Spain says it was their treasure all along. Indigenous people say the treasure was theirs because they mined it.
The dispute may or may not be settled by a web of ancient and modern maritime laws.
