The only photos from living specimens of the ivory-billed woodpecker are in black-and-white. There has been no confirmed sighting in the U.S. since 1944. In September, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service declared that the quirky and beautiful woodpecker is extinct. The service declared 22 other species as extinct, too, including the Bachman's warbler, a songbird last seen in Cuba in 1981. Other species included varieties of freshwater mussels, fish, plants and some Hawaiian birds.
