Obey the wildfire warnings

It's wildfire season, and if you're in a fire's path, you must get out and get out early.

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), everyone in fire-prone areas should regularly check the news and prepare to leave as soon as authorities urge evacuation. Never just wait and see — fire travels at 70 mph and burns at 1000 degrees. You probably can't outrun it and you definitely can't survive it. Plan your routes in advance.

Take your pets. You are completely responsible for their lives and, if you leave them, they will die. Do not leave the pets in a room or roaming free.

Some important emergency items don't take much room. They include:

* A flashlight, battery-operated radio and cell phone charger with extra batteries, and matches in a waterproof container.

* A three-day supply of medications, plus cash, pencil and paper, and a dust mask.

* Personal hygiene items and feminine supplies.

* Diapers, wipes, formula, and other supplies for babies.

* Food for humans and pets.
