The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new drug called Apretude, the first injectable option for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis, also called PrEP. According to Healthline, the drug is injected every two months to reduce the risk of sexually-acquired HIV.
Apretude may be a promising alternative to other PrEP regimens, which consist of daily oral medication. One physician believes that for individuals who forget to take daily medications or prefer not to, an appointment every two months for an injection will be easier and more effective.
