Medication shows promise for meth addiction

Methamphetamine overdose deaths are surging nationwide, but two common medications may be useful for addiction treatment, according to Harvard Women's Health Watch.

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that individuals treated with a combination of naltrexone, which is used to treat opioid and alcohol addiction, and bupropion, a commonly prescribed antidepressant, were more likely to respond to treatment than individuals in the control group that received no medications. Most people receiving the treatment reported no serious side effects.
