There's nothing like a spring thunderstorm, when the fireworks from the sky cause quite a display — and danger, too.
If you are outdoors when you hear thunder, everyone knows they should seek shelter. The best shelter is indoors or in a hard-topped car.
The worst shelter is under a tree, by a utility poll or any isolated tall structure. Even standing near a tree is dangerous since lightning travels along the ground surface.
Never wait to take shelter until it starts raining or you hear thunder. By the time it starts to rain, lightning can already be operating up to 10 miles from the rain area. When you hear thunder, the danger is imminent.
If you are caught in an open field, crouch low with feet together. Do not lie flat on the ground.
Once inside, it's a good idea to stay away from windows, doors and porches. Avoid washing dishes or taking showers during a lightning storm. Stay off corded phones. Unplug electronics.
Protect your pets. Dog houses are not safe shelters. Dogs chained to trees are at risk.
