It's hot -- drink more water

When it's more than 80 degrees out, it's hard for your body to maintain a temperature balance. That can result in heat fatigue, heat rash, vomiting, nausea and deadly heat stroke.

Heat stroke causes high body temperature. The body goes into shock and death could occur. Dehydration is a major cause. When the body loses water, it can't regulate temperature and it overheats. If you suspect heat stroke, move the person to a cool place and sponge with cool water. Get medical help fast. Signs of dehydration: dizziness and fatigue, flushed skin and dry mouth.

Kids have less body mass and the effects of dehydration come quickly and are more severe. Fill them up with water before they go out.

Quench thirst with water. Sports drinks and diluted fruit juice are also OK. When exercising in heat, rest and drink water every 15 minutes.

Heat rash occurs in humid weather when perspiration can't evaporate. Treat it by applying cornstarch, say doctors at Baylor Medical Center.
