How to choose an umbrella

If April rains have you looking for an umbrella, consider your needs before you buy.

Umbrellas come in two basic categories: telescopic and full-length. Telescopic umbrellas are lighter, smaller, more compact and easy to carry, but they are not good in strong winds. Full-length umbrellas are superior in wind and rain, but they aren't as easy to carry or store.

According to William Wong, managing director at Arterton Limited, polyester or nylon is a superior canopy fabric to plastic, but there are exceptions.

If you will be walking alone in a crowded area, a clear plastic bubble umbrella will keep your face and hair protected and allow you to see while you are walking.

For golfing, the key is finding an umbrella made for golf with a large canopy that covers both gear and golfer.

If you just need an umbrella to get you from car to store, look for one that is compact, telescopic, and lightweight.

When two people will need shelter under one umbrella, look for a full-length umbrella. The more spokes, the better.
