The historic Grand Canyon Lodge on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon burned to the ground in July as the Dragon Bravo wildfire swept across tens of thousands of acres of parkland.
According to Smithsonian, the wildfire, caused by a lightning strike, consumed at least 5,000 acres and dozens of buildings. It was not yet contained in July.
But the most dramatic loss was the Lodge, a hotel since 1937, when it was rebuilt after a fire in 1932. The Lodge was constructed from ponderosa pine beams with a heavy limestone facade. It featured soaring windows in its sunroom with timeless views of the North Rim.
