Decorators say there is a disturbing trend among homeowners nationwide: They are using their spare bedrooms for storage instead of creating a comfortable environment for their guests.
Because the spare bedroom is used only a few times a year, it becomes an easy place to store things. But when guests are expected, it's time to declutter. Remove all articles your guests will not use. You can add some useful furniture, such as a place where the guest can put a suitcase.
In her book, Discovering Home: Find Your Personal Style (Meredith Books), author Laurie Smith suggests a spare-room can turn the unused room into a get-away spot you can use all year. Add a comfortable chair and a lamp for reading.
If you need to use the room for some storage, put 4-inch or 6-inch risers under the bed frame. The extra under-bed space can accommodate boxes that guests won't see. It's not an ideal arrangement, but it can work if you need it.
Before guests are scheduled spend a night in the room yourself to see if it feels convenient and comfortable.
If you could use a new set of sheets anyway, remember that most guests would love the luxurious feel of new, high-thread-count sheets.
And finally, be sure there is available space in the closet for their clothes.
