Maritime workers often report bad habits and poor health, according to a study by the National Institutes of Safety and Health.
Maritime workers were 39 percent more likely to report smoking compared to other U.S. workers and 28 percent more likely to report binge drinking. The workers also more frequently reported diabetes, cancer, COPD and obesity.
The study, published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, used survey data from all maritime work, including workers in shipyards, commercial fishing, marine terminals, transportation, diving and seafood processing.
