Activities: Act up! Community theater

Try civic theater for fun or entertainment

People to see, things to do, and it's art. And maybe work. But it's satisfying.

We are talking civic theater, where ordinary people become stars for a day and each performance is anything but ordinary.

Sometimes called amateur theater or community theater, there are thousands of small theater companies in cities large and small. They put on about four to six plays a year for local audiences.

For every production, there is plenty of work — and not just acting or singing.

Someone has to build sets. Walls have to be painted. Lights have to be set up. Sound systems have to be perfected.

Others have to arrange and fit costumes. Someone has to help with makeup. Musicians have to play music. And there are always errands.

Once the production is ready, someone has to sell tickets, help people to their seats, and solve problems.

When you think about it, producing a play is a breathtaking project. No wonder civic theaters are constantly on the lookout for people to help with these many challenges.

Of course, working together with others on a task as huge as a play can be fun. Lots of people sharing a task because they love it. And the post-production gatherings are fun, too.

It is also a great way to just be entertained. Tickets are rarely expensive, and it is a fun way to spend an evening. You'll get to know the local actors and their fans.
