Why more robots can mean more injuries

Adding robots to a warehouse sounds like a clear win for safety. The surprise, according to reviews of federal injury data, is that the buildings packed with the most robots have often reported the most injuries — and the reason has little to do with machines bumping into anyone.

The pattern shows up most plainly at Amazon, which now runs more than a million robots. According to the Washington Post's analysis of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) records, serious injury rates at Amazon warehouses have run close to double those at sites operated by other companies. A 2026 study by the Strategic Organizing Center, a labor coalition, found that Amazon's robotic sorting centers reported about 7.3 serious injuries per 100 workers, against 5.7 at comparable sites without the technology.

Why would automation make a job riskier? The answer is pace. Robots ferry goods to workers far faster than people once retrieved them by hand, and hourly quotas climb to match. According to the investigative newsroom Reveal, employees at some robotic centers were expected to handle roughly 400 items an hour, compared with about 100 at older buildings. OSHA has pointed to the predictable hazards — constant bending, repeated reaching, and standing through entire shifts — the very motions behind the strains and sprains that account for most injuries.

Employers counter that robots take over the heaviest lifting, and that newer models deliver items at waist height to spare backs and shoulders. According to Amazon, such changes have lowered its rate of strain-and-sprain injuries. Safety specialists agree the machines can help — but say the gains vanish when the same robots are used mainly to push people to move faster.

Robots, it turns out, are only as safe as the targets set for the people working beside them.
