Ultra-rich individuals, those that are worth at least $30 million, could live comfortably anywhere on the planet but as of this year, Hong Kong holds the largest number of them, about 10,000, which surpassed the next leader, New York City.
The Big Apple accounts for only about 9,000, according to Fortune.
Tokyo and Paris round out the top four on the list which increased 13 percent last year to now include 256,000 people across the globe that command assets of around $31.5 trillion. Much of Hong Kong's growth stems from the wealth generation of the Asia-Pacific in general, as the global share of ultra-rich in the region grew from 18 percent in 2008 to over 25 percent today.
Forbes magazine looked at the list of billionaires around the globe and found that New York City still claims the top spot for richest of the rich. As of 2018, NYC was home to 79 billionaires including it's richest, Michael Bloomberg, who is worth around $40 billion.
While big metropolitan cities can claim the most significant populations of wealthy individuals, the world's three wealthiest men actually live in places where there aren't a lot of billionaires moving in. Amazon's Jeff Bezos, worth about $160 billion, lives in Seattle, Washington, the home of his company's headquarters. Also in Washington, Microsoft's Bill Gates resides in Medina while Warren Buffet has lived in Omaha, Nebraska for much of his life and has a current net worth of almost $90 billion to his name.
