It isn't funny, but it is unusual.
In the town of San Rafael, California, five people were attacked and two went to the hospital following an assault by a squirrel. In separate cases, women were out for a walk when a brown squirrel, evidently the same one in each case, leapt at them, attaching itself to a leg, or going for the face and arms. One woman was left with deep lacerations on her arms.
Squirrels do not carry rabies.
Marin Humane speculates that people have been feeding the squirrel. Wildlife rehabilitation workers think the squirrel was raised by humans and has no skills for surviving in the wild. They speculate that the squirrel is hungry and wants to find a human to feed him.
The latest reports say the attacks have stopped, leading some to speculate that the squirrel has died.
