The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced a ban on Red No. 3, a food dye still included in more than 3,000 food products nationwide. According to NBC News, the dye has been banned in the E.U. since 1994 over its potential carcinogenic properties — which means that suitable alternatives to the famous cherry-red hue are readily available. The ban is set to take effect in 2027.
