Strep throat infection rates are higher than usual this year, and experts fear that surging cases may worsen an ongoing amoxicillin shortage, according to NBC News. Cases have been steadily rising in the mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions, with some areas reporting twice as many diagnoses compared to previous years. While the infection is easily treatable with the antibiotic amoxicillin, intermittent shortages may force providers to choose other antibiotics for first-line treatment.
