Stay snowmobile smart

Crispy winter breezes and a sunny day make you eager to get out there and start an invigorating snowmobile ride.

But, like all vehicles, snowmobiles can be dangerous, so don't go out if you've had a drink or two. Then, keep your mind on the road, don't let a cell phone's ring distract you.

Know that your vehicle is in good condition so you won't be stranded. The International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association suggests the following:

Don't go alone. Taking someone with you is more fun and it's safer. And let others know what your plans are.

Wear a safety-certified helmet that fits you.

Don't ride on private property unless you have permission. In town, stay off sidewalks and walkways.

Consider the area where you'll be riding. Have a map or talk to other riders about problem areas.

Stop before crossing a road. Then cross at a right angle to traffic.

Use hand signals to let other drivers or riders know what your plans are.

At night, don't just follow a taillight. Be alert for problems or obstructions.

Be cautious around water. Don't cross lakes or rivers unless you are sure about the thickness of the ice.
