RAMageddon is here

No, not Armageddon — RAMageddon, as in RAM for computers. It's an essential component of pretty much any computer or computer-adjacent device, and the enormous demand from AI and data center companies have eaten up the supply for the foreseeable future. And this shortage is expected to be much more than just a moderate annoyance — everyone from consumers to video game developers will face significantly higher costs, which generally translates into scaled-back plans.

According to Tom's Guide, RAM prices have already increased about 500 percent globally, while solid state drives have spiked 100 percent. Manufacturers, meanwhile, will be maxed out for years to come as they race to keep up with the AI industry's appetite for RAM and high-bandwidth memory chips.

And stockpiled chips to supplement supply? Forget about it. Most of the available supply has already been vacuumed up, leaving consumers with just a few very expensive crumbs.

This year, we may see prices spike for consumer goods like laptops, mobile phones, tablets, and video game consoles. According to Yahoo! Tech, even tech giants like Nvidia can't escape RAMageddon, and are scrambling to adapt to the catastrophe.

But nothing lasts forever, including RAMageddon. Currently, two possible resolutions lie in the distance. Either manufacturing capacity will increase to accommodate consumer and industry demand, or the AI bubble will burst.
