Obesity drug shows promise

Drugmaker Eli Lilly announced that in clinical trials for an experimental obesity drug, overweight and obese participants lost an average of 52 pounds, according to the New York Times. The drug, called tirzepatide, may offer a promising option for patients in the so-called treatment gap — while they may be overweight or obese, they do not qualify for bariatric surgery or wish to avoid surgery for other reasons. The drug is another entry in the newest generation of obesity treatments that physicians hope will help people manage their weight more effectively without surgery.
