A little courtesy makes a neighborhood feel like home, but few holidays test neighborhood goodwill quite like Independence Day.
Here is how to celebrate without becoming the talk of the cul-de-sac.
Know the rules. According to local government websites across the country, most cities and counties set specific hours for legal home fireworks, typically between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. on July 4. Some HOAs ban fireworks entirely. A quick check of city ordinances and HOA bylaws before the holiday can save a $200 citation and a strained relationship with the homeowners' association.
Give neighbors a heads up. According to etiquette expert Patricia Rossi, author of "Everyday Etiquette," a brief text or note before the holiday goes a long way. Mention the date, the approximate hours, and the type of fireworks you plan to use. Neighbors with babies, elderly parents, veterans with PTSD, or anxious dogs will appreciate the warning, and you may avoid a noise complaint.
Remember the four-legged neighbors. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, more pets go missing on July 4 than on any other day of the year. The American Kennel Club estimates that fireworks cause anxiety in nearly half of dogs. Setting off fireworks across the street from a kennel or a home with dogs is a quick way to make enemies. If you must light fireworks, finish early and avoid the loudest ones late at night.

Mind the fire risk. According to the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office, dry grass, wood-shake roofs, and patio furniture cushions are the most common ignition points for July 4 house fires. Keep a hose or bucket of water within reach.
