Merck updates cancer drug with an assist from NASA

The versatile cancer drug Keytruda is now available as an injectable formula, thanks in part to research conducted aboard the International Space Station. According to NASA, Merck Research Labs has flown crystal growth experiments to the space station for over a decade to support its efforts to develop drug formulations that readily dissolve in liquid. The new injection takes about one minute every three weeks to administer, while intravenous Keytruda required at least 30 minutes every three weeks — a significant time savings that is also expected to reduce treatment costs.
