Dogs and cats (especially grumpy ones) are certainly fun, but some of the best animals to follow online are the quirky ones. And the latest one to steal our hearts — for the next couple of years anyway — is a beaver.
"Beave" found his way to wildlife rehabilitator Nancy Coyne after being rescued from the side of the road at three weeks old. Coyne, who told NPR she suspects Beave was orphaned, is raising him at home and teaching him the skills he'll need to eventually live on his own.
Of course, Beave landed on TikTok along the way. And videos of him net millions of views.
Coyne has posted videos of Beave building dams in her house, grabbing anything at his height and damming up the doorways. He is particularly fond of plungers. Coyne started a dam pile for him so he didn't have to collect everything in the house.
Coyne makes it clear that Beave is not a pet. She's teaching him how to swim under the ice and find his own food. And he lives in her house because beavers are social animals that usually live in large colonies.
He would normally be close to his mother, so instead he's bonded with Coyne, who will help him move on between two and three years old. Coyne said hormones should kick in then and he'll want to find a mate and find a family. When he does, his pond will be ready for him.
