Maybe it is a ethic that has been instilled in us: Waste not, want not. Or maybe it's just that even ordinary things can be imbued with memories.
But whatever the reason, throwing our stuff away is hard.
Still, there comes a time when it must be done. Not everything can be donated, gifted, or organized. In fact, the answer is rarely more organization. Instead, we just need less stuff.
What should you trash (and not donate or sell)? Anything that is stained, damaged, dirty, broken, torn, doesn't fit or has no use in your everyday life. Here are some culprits in the clutter world that you can consider for trash: kids' toys, books, albums and CDs, old clothing, and knick knacks. And there's more: hobby items you don't use, gifts you never liked, costume jewelry you won't wear, birthday cards, fake flowers, broken heirlooms, pictures colored by children.
Take photos of the things you want to remember or want others to know.
Create only one memory box that stores easily in your home, with an eye toward your heirs. Consider storing memories and items that tell them something about you, your family, heritage, values, or themselves.
