How to use smartphones in the car

Smartphones are as ubiquitous in people's hands as cars are on the road, but reconciling their use together has created many problems for drivers due to safety concerns.

According to the National Safety Council, the safest way to drive with a phone is to put it in the trunk.

So, what should a reasonable, safety-conscious adult be doing to help minimize those risks?

Hands-Free Mounts

Mounting solutions for phones have been around for a while, but over the years smartphones have gotten bigger, and the amount of applications that drivers want to use on the road has grown. According to the Wall Street Journal, mounting the phone is the lesser evil when compared to holding the phone with hands or using it in another location such as a cup holder.

Dashboard mounts are often considered safest for phone and driver. These mounts use clips, cradles, and magnets to keep the phone secure and promise to keep phones safely out of hands and out of the way (depending on the solution chosen).

Hands-free voice controls

Now that the phone is out of the driver's hands the biggest hurdle is to get eyes off of them as well.

Most modern smartphone options have some voice control capability, but they vary in overall effectiveness depending on an individual's preferences. The two biggest players in this arena, Apple's CarPlay and Android Auto, both have lots of options for navigation, music, and text messaging all while staying hand and eye free from the phone itself.
