If you like casual basketball because it's a nice, sociable way to exercise, then don't try real pickup basketball.
The casual kind is what you play at company picnics, family reunions, and with a few guys in the neighborhood.
A serious pickup game is an every-man-for-himself clash where body types and social standing don't matter. All are equal under the rim, says Men's Fitness, but a serious game can be serious fun — if you do it right.
In addition to court skills, you have to be adaptable, patient and strong. Here's how to survive and thrive in five-on-five:
Warm up. Stretch and shoot around before getting sweaty.
Approach the players with respect and be friendly. Don't demand to get into the game; ask. Introduce yourself, and call others by name.
Dress for the game. You'll look ridiculous in loafers and pants. Dress for a workout. Protect ankles with high-top basketball shoes.
Check their level of skill. As in golf, players come in A, B, C, and D levels of skill. Gauge the competition before joining. If it's over your head, skip it.
Know the court boundaries. Somewhere near the beginning of the game, make sure you determine what they are.
Understand the ethics of your opponents. In some games, you have to show blood for a foul to be called. In others, they'll call you if you brush a guy's shin.
Watch the trash talk. "Friendly insults" can be taken seriously, and you don't know always know how other players will react. If insulted yourself, ignore it.
A good pickup game can bring community, fellowship and bonding. You know you're in a superb game when all communication is exchanged with grunts and high-fives — the true language of pickup basketball.
