All across Europe the bracelet scam is an infamous way for criminals to snatch tourist money — and all because people hate to be impolite.
In the bracelet scam, a young man will call out to a tourist, especially a single person or a couple, with a compliment: Nice shoes!
It's natural to look or smile, but this brief moment is all it takes for the bracelet scam to go into full swing. The moment the victim pauses, the scammer will tie a cheap bracelet around the victim's wrist. Often they will say it is free, but they deserve a tip.
If the victim refuses a tip, the situation can escalate, sometimes with the scammer declaring the victim is a racist. Other times, the scammer's gang will begin harassing the victim.
In any case, if the victim takes out a purse or wallet, the scammer snatches it and runs. If the victim takes out a bill, then the scammer takes it and demands more money.
How to avoid this sordid scam?
Experts say you must do exactly the opposite of your training and nature. Be aware of your surroundings. Never respond in any way to a friendly compliment or comment. Never look at the bracelet man. Never speak, not even to say no. Pretend the person does not exist and keep walking. If physically accosted, be prepared to make a scene, yelling for help, calling for police.
