How Mario got his name

How Mario got his name

In 1981, the video game company Nintendo rented a warehouse space in Tukwila, Washington. The company was on the verge of a revolution in gaming with its handheld devices, but at that time, it wasn't the $16 billion a year company it is now.

Nintendo staff was working on a new plumber character for its Donkey Kong game. They called him Jumpman, but they wanted a real name.

Meanwhile, the company fell behind on its warehouse rent and aroused the ire of Mario Segale, a Seattle businessman who owned the warehouse. He showed up to set the upstart company straight. Segale dressed down the company president in front of the staff and when he left, finally convinced he would get his rent, the staff had a name.

Mario Segale died in 2018, a wealthy businessman in construction who wanted to be known for his achievements, not necessarily his connection to a game character. He once said he was still waiting for the royalty check. But, evidently, not the rent.
