Try one of these eight world-famous sandwiches instead of your usual turkey. Your taste buds will thank you.
Montreal smoked meat
Beef brisket that's been dry-cured, marinated and smoked, then served on light rye bread with yellow mustard, usually with coleslaw, French fries and a pickle on the side.
Welsh rarebit
Don't call it melted cheese on toast. Welsh rarebit (usually pronounced "rabbit") is a creamy cheese sauce, made with a mix of cheddar, butter, mustard, flour, beer, Worcestershire sauce and pepper, then poured over hot buttered toast.
Chinese hamburger (rou jia mo)
Chinese people have been making the English muffin-like bun (bai ji mo) and the pork belly filling for thousands of years. The shredded pork belly filling is usually braised with a mixture of onions, ginger, hot peppers, sugar, soy sauce, spices and Shaoxing wine.
South African Gatsby
The signature sandwich of Cape Town, South Africa, the Gatsby is a crusty toasted roll stuffed with sliced bologna, French fries, ketchup, lettuce and hot piri-piri sauce. The finished product is enough to feed about four people, so don't dine alone.
Sabich
A traditional quick breakfast of Iraqi Jews and common throughout Israel. Pita or laffa bread is stuffed with fried eggplants, hard-boiled eggs, chopped salad, parsley, amba (a pickled mango condiment) and tahini sauce.
Mumbai sandwich
A classic Indian street food, and it's vegetarian-friendly. Spiced potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, crumbled paneer cheese and chat masala on white bread, served grilled.
Torta Cubana
Not Cuban — it's actually a Mexico City thing. It's big and messy, with piles of breaded meats, a slice of pierna (pork leg), a hot dog split down the middle, ham, quesillo and American cheese. Chase it with some Tums.
Fischbroetchen
This Northern German fast food staple contains fish, pickles, remoulade, onions, lettuce and horseradish on a bun.
