As winter's icy fingers tighten their grip on our roads, drivers must adapt and equip themselves for the challenge.
Snow and ice can turn even the most familiar routes into treacherous paths, but with the right precautions, drivers can confidently navigate through the winter wonderland.
First, stay attentive. Winter conditions require special attention, so don't let yourself drift into autopilot. Slow down. Keep extra distance from other vehicles. Keep a firm grip on the steering wheel and stay off your phone.
It makes sense to prepare for the unexpected during winter. It's no big deal to put a blanket in the car — and you should. In case of a breakdown, that blanket will be a key to survival. Keep your phone charged, too.
Carry a sturdy ice scraper and snow brush to clear windshields and windows and ensure optimal visibility. A small shovel can also prove invaluable to dig out a stuck vehicle or clear snow from around tires.
In many areas, drivers should consider investing in winter tires, which provide superior grip on icy surfaces. Additionally, carrying tire chains or traction mats can offer an extra layer of security when encountering particularly treacherous roads.
Stay informed about weather conditions and road closures. Use weather apps or tune in to local news stations for valuable updates on changing condition, so you can plan your route accordingly.
