If you have to install a privacy fence, you have a lot of options but it boils down to one dynamic: Expense versus maintenance.
Wood fencing is just less expensive. According to Bryant Fence, natural wood privacy fencing costs about $14, $24 per linear foot installed. If price is critical, wood fencing will be a good choice. But, it won't be long before you have to paint it and repair it — usually within five years.
Vinyl is the other main choice. The cost here is double that of wood fencing — $28 to $52 per linear foot installed. The difference is that you'll never have to touch it under normal circumstances. No paint, no repairs, no replacement. It won't rot, warp, or fade. Insects don't harm it. You clean it with a hose from time to time. It lasts decades. The only problem, if you do have to replace or repair something, it can be very difficult since slats are glued, according to Family Handyman.
Aluminum is another material used in privacy fencing, although it is more typically seen as a picket style. Cost is a big factor with per square foot of materials running about $33-$53, not including installation. Installation requires a professional and it may not be suitable for rolling terrain. However, the material, which comes in various colors and styles, does not rust, making it suitable for coastal areas.
