Intense exercise may deplete calcium

Intense physical exertion over long periods of time may decrease bone mineral density (BMD), according to researchers at the University of Colorado's Anschutz Medical Campus. In separate studies that monitored the BMD of male and female cyclists over a year of training and competition, the researchers found that both groups lost BMD at rates comparable to post-menopausal women. More research is needed to learn why the bone loss occurred and how it can be prevented or reversed.
