Zebras on the lam

Zebras on the lam

Five zebras escaped from a Maryland farm on Aug. 31 and as of the end of September, they were still free. Could the dazzling zebras live free and thrive?

After all, the wild ponies of Assateague are said to be the descendants of a 17th century shipwreck off the Virginia coast. They made it.

According to DCist, the zerbras could possibly adapt to cold winters. At the Smithsonian National Zoo, the zebras often choose winter weather over their heated barn. Plus, there aren't a whole lot of zebra predators in Maryland.

The problem, naturalists say, is that a new species in the ecosystem can have bad consequences for the local animals. Most say that the zebras will soon be caught, since they have been spotted at feeding traps and barely dodged capture.
