When it comes to self-adornment, people can choose from an increasing number of permanent and semi-permanent options, like eyeliner, eyebrows, tattoos and piercings.
So maybe permanent jewelry isn't so strange.
At least two billion TikTokers have tuned in to watch various videos of the installation of a permanent bangle bracelet. It's welded together on the wrist and never comes off — at least not without a bolt cutter or a special tool.
On the one hand, it's a bold solution to the problem of buying expensive jewelry and then losing that expensive jewelry. According to the Wall Street Journal, Cartier's iconic Love bracelet costs $6,900. At that price, you would hate to leave it at a sink in a public restroom. To prevent catastrophe, the Love bracelet locks into place and comes with a special tool so you or a trustworthy friend can open it.
Some bracelets are not nearly as expensive, but just as secure. One variety of tiny linked bracelet is welded together on the wrist. These bracelets can start out at under $100 and can be taken off and refastened for a fee.
It can cause some inconveniences. Going through airport security can be difficult, since you can't take the bangle off. Surgery can be problematic, especially if you need MRI scans. Or a thousand other situations in work, sports, or general living situations during which a snagged bracelet could be a serious problem.
