The excitement of moving day!

Moving day tip sheet

It's moving day! A lot of work ahead, but so much fun to have a brand-new space, a new neighborhood, be closer to work or family, and all the possibilities of this new step in your life.

Here is what you do before you move any boxes:

1. Set up utilities

2. Set up internet and cable

3. Change locks

When that is finished, it's time to do the repairs and cleaning. Set yourself up for success by bringing the right tools for the job.

While your first days in the new house will be work days, consider your comfort first. You'll need a chair and a cooler loaded with water and some snacks. Bring a bluetooth speaker to play music. Don't forget a phone charger.

Now for your work, you'll need a complete collection of cleaning supplies, a step stool, lightbulbs, trash bags, and batteries.

Do the more obvious cleaning on doors and walls and paint where needed. Look at easily missed areas such as tracks on sliding doors, the tops of molding, and corners that catch dust. Check the cabinets under the sink. Dry clean or wash all remaining curtains or install new ones. Clean and repair blinds.

While the house is empty, it is also a good time to check smoke detectors, making sure batteries are new and that the detector is functioning.

It's best to clean and repair ceilings right now, so schedule the proper contractors if you need them.

Once the basics are finished, here are some additional supplies you'll need for the move: box cutters, furniture sliders, black markers for boxes. Try some sticky notes to put on doors to direct movers to bedroom 1, bedroom 2, basement, etc.
