Pet humanization trend sparks new products

Pet culture worldwide is generating whole new markets as humans begin to treat the critters like family members.

Human-grade pet food is taking off for pampered pets. The finished gourmet meals, which are tailored for each hungry pet's needs and tastes, are delivered directly to their homes.

Pet furniture is another mini-industry, with a special focus on cat gymnasiums and activities.

Doting owners can purchase pet clothing, enrichment toys to keep dogs entertained, and talking floor buttons to help pets communicate their thoughts and desires.

New services include pet insurance, grooming and spa, day care, and special medical treatments.

According to the American Pet Products Association, pet industry sales have surged 50 percent in the past five years, reaching more than $150 billion in 2024. To put it in perspective, that number is five times the sales of McDonald's.

People don't just buy for their dogs and cats, either. Hamster cams have become a booming trend, allowing people to watch the hamster activities that mainly occur at night.
