Nuclear Bot author arrested

In 2017, people started receiving unsettling emails that included their passwords in the subject line.

Dubbed Nuclear Bot, the malware was an extortion scheme that claimed to have a video of the user watching pornography. Pay up, the extortionist said, or every one of your contacts will receive a copy of the video.

French investigators now say they have arrested two hackers responsible for the scheme that funneled, at minimum, a million Euros into their bitcoin accounts, according to Kreb On Security.

One of the hackers had a legitimate technology career.

The scheme was exposed — and a manhunt began — after the hacker posted his code on a forum, evidently for bragging rights and to prove the sophistication of his malware.
