New year, new house!

If you are planning to sell — or just enjoy the old homestead for now — here is one project that will launch your home happily into the New Year.

Deep cleaning is one of the most satisfying projects for sellers and non-sellers alike.

If you've been living in your home for some time, it's easy to overlook the nooks, crannies, and corners, but that's exactly where you should begin with deep cleaning. For sellers, there is no better, or cheaper, way to make your home stand out.

Corners and edges are the top offenders. The corner of every door frame and edge of every wall. Dirt abides, less visible to us than to others. Consider keeping a little paint available to touch up as you go.

Clean under the beds — a thankless task that is oddly satisfying. Remove that stuff you have stashed under the bed. And the random shoes. Vacuum and clean the legs of the bed. No one else may notice, but you'll know and you earn the right to be the tiniest bit smug about it, too.

Detail the window frames inside and out. Get all those little corners. Don't forget sliding doors. That annoying build-up of dirt in sliding door tracks needs to go. Include the mirrors in this part of the project. This is a clean that people will notice!

Dust the fixtures. Ceiling fans, lamps, vents, tops of molding. All those light hidden layers of dust must go! While you are at it, take a good look at your ceilings and inspect for dust and spider webs.
