FDA approves controversial ALS drug

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Relyvrio, a new drug for the treatment of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig's disease), reversing a previous denial after the agency determined that there was insufficient evidence to prove the drug's effectiveness, according to Forbes.

The initial rejection raised the ire of patient advocacy groups, prompting the panel to reexamine their findings. Relyvrio's sponsor, Amylyx Pharmaceuticals, plans to price the drug at $158,000 for a year's supply.
