The apple orchard: People of all ages can enjoy a trip to a big orchard, and that includes sweethearts, parents, kids and some of the kids' friends. These days, there's more to do at an orchard than the variety of apples you want. Some let you pick your own apples from their low-hanging trees.
Commercial orchards will demonstrate how cider is made and give you a taste. They'll give you a tour and explain the different types of apples and their various uses.
The pumpkin patch: Children can pick out the perfect pumpkins for carving a jack o'lanterns. Adults can choose two or three large ones to decorate the doorstep or tiny ones for eye-catching table decorations.
The walk in the leaves: Walking in the park is something of an adventure. In many places, the fallen leaves pile up knee-deep. You can hear them crunching, and kids can roll in them.
The corn maze: One ad for a maze says: "Lost, laughin' and lovin' it!" If you happen to live anywhere near corn country, check online for a maze near you.
Zoos and haunted houses: Be on the lookout for special events at the your nearest zoo, where kids can often trick-or-treat and watch animals enjoy some special autumn treats.
Commercial and charity haunted houses can also be a thrill for the whole family.
