For purists, let's state the obvious. A good watermelon needs little more than cutting to be a fantastic treat on July 4th or any lovely summer day.
This fruit is high on nutrition and low on calories. One cup has 46 calories while it is rich in the amino acid citrulline and the antioxidant lycopene. Because it is 92 percent water, you don't need to eat much to feel satisfied and hydrated.
You can scoop it into joyful little red balls, slice it, and even blend it into your favorite drinks, but one thing few people do is put it on the grill.
Yet, grilled watermelon is a thing.
Watermelon fans might just love it because it turns out that grilling little triangles of watermelon enhances the sweetness and adds a little smoky flavor, according to Southern Living. You can serve these little gems as a dessert or side dish.
Prep
You don't want large round slabs of melon because they tend to fall apart on the grill. So begin by cutting the melon into one-inch triangle wedges. Cut off a half inch from both sides of the melon. Stand the melon on one of the cut ends, then cut lengthwise into quarters. Each quarter can then be cut into small triangles and sprinkled with a sugar salt combination. The sugar will caramelize on the surface of the melon.
Ingredients
* One ripe 3-4 pound watermelon.
* 3 tablespoons granulated sugar.
* 1/2 teaspoon salt.
* Optional topping include lime zest, Tajin, or chili powder.
Combine salt and sugar to sprinkle on the melon slices.
Grill
Preheat gas grill to 450-500 degrees. Oil the grates. Grill uncovered for about 3 minutes per side until grill marks appear.
